Hello,
You will see quite a variation to the tone of antique quartered oak bookcases when you look at different cases. Darkening is normal, as the varnish ages over time. Be leary of early stacking bookcases that have perfectly toned or "light" finishes - as they have been usually refinished.
Dampness or direct sunlight, often cause the finish to darken faster, and is the likely culpret to which you describe above. Also keep in mind that "Antique oak" refers to the lighter finish of oak, and "Golden" is the darker.
The bands are made out of Brass - and have an original oxodized finish to them. So you dont want to clean them up since the oxodation is suppose to be there.
As long as the warped back does not affect the way the bookcase stacks, I would not replace it. It will reduce the value of the case to replace it - since the label can not be moved to the new backing.
Hope this helps!
