ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

pattern in veneer

I have a bedroom set from the 1940s I am refinishing. The tops of the dresser and vanity were in very bad shape and had to be sanded. However the finish on the headboard and drawers is alligatoring, so I used alcohol and lacquer thinner to remove only the shellac. The center of each drawer appears to be veneer with a burl pattern, and on each side is a striped veneer in a V pattern. While trying to repair this finish I discovered the pattern is actually a stain, and I have ruined the stain on 2 drawers. Is anyone familiar with this method of staining? I still want to repair the drawers I haven't touched, and maybe duplicate the stain on the drawers I've ruined.
