Unfortunately, there is probably no easy way to accomplish what you want on this piece, other than the usual route of either stripping, partial stripping, toning/glazing, distressing etc. It's probably factory lacquered which leaves you very few options...and not a job for the inexperienced or faint of heart...it's a lot of work...to make it look good...
