There are several formulas for crackle lacquer, some can be purchased from the shelves of paint stores pretty much ready to go. Once you get the effect you want you can lay on a shellac sealer coat and more finish, to get the effect you are after. The original trick resulted from putting down a layer of hide glue and when the next coat of paint over that dried, it would crack. The whole process will require some experimentation from you, as the paint and clear coats you choose will effect the final results. find the color that will be in the cracks, put this down first, then put on the crackle layer, (ie. Hide or Liquid Hide glue) Then try to spray on a medium coat of the top color, a spray lacquer may work best. The cracks will vary with this application depending on how thick and wet you put it on. Then seal with shellac, finish thickness can be developed at this stage, and lastly a clear lacquer.
