You can wash off the majority of the dirt with a mild soapy water and dry quickly. Next use paint thinner and a cotton rag to scrub the remaining wax and dirt from the finish. Inspect the finish now to determine weather you can salvage what is there. If compromised with wear and marks you may decide to strip and refinish. If the old finish is crazed badely you can reamalgamate it with a solvent. Let me know if you choose this route and I will help you over that, or go back and look up the topic from previous threads here. Leave the inside free from any stain or finish as this provides the aromatic effect. However you can clean the inside with a paint thinner and steel wool working with the grain. Sand the inside with 180 grit to open the pores to reactivate the aroma.
