If the damage is not seen then I think it can be ignored, so long as there is no chance of the weakening resulting in structural failure of some kind. An epoxy putty like Quick-Wood will replace the stregnth factor if there is a concern. I will drill 1/8" holes into the work area so that the putty grips the surface more completely. However an older item, significant antique, or collectable may be best left as is, since some repairs can be seen as detracting unless done in a fully restorative manner. White Chapel is a great source for the casters I believe you may have there, more common ones can be found at vandykes".com
