It's kind of a judgement call depending on the result you desire...If you have determined that it definately is shellac, then you can wash it down with mineral spirits, and if the overall color and appearance looks good while it's wet with the MS, dry and simply recoat it with a few coats of shellac, scuff sand with 400-600 wet/dry paper till smooth to the touch between coats, then rub the final coat back with 0000 steel wool and paste wax. The other option if the finish is intact and just looks "dry", is to clean and then paste wax. I like a colored wax in these situations, it will hide small scratches and nicks better and lend a more aged appearance to the piece, as well as protecting the original finish and leaving it intact. If the finish is really rough and crazed, or even whitish and blotchy, you may need to do a more extensive job to make it look good,..77 years also puts it about 1920 ish...which means it actually could be nitrocellulose lacquer....but if it softens or gets sticky with alcohol...then you're right it is shellac.
