I have gone to using an auto polisher with a wool pad. I use a parafin oil and rotten stone for a med. sheen, and pumice powder and parafin oil for gloss. Next I use the extra fine polish from 3M, for cars, to give it the brightest scratch free shine. This has cut my polishing time in half, I avoid all sand paper after the last coat of finish and I wait at least one week for the finish to harden properly.
