Have you used a stain under the lacquer? It's possible that the nitro has not cured fully yet, thats what it sounds like......obviously the longer you wait the better sanding chacteristics it will show...it also seems to me that you shouldn't have to use so many different grits to acheive this look....what is your usual final rub out...oil and rotten stone or Finesse-it...machine or hand rub? Is this a large tabletop?
