For the record, no one here has suggested using a belt sander on a table top of antique origen. The first query has a concern for an unsatisfactory surface. Knowing this I believe the predominant problem to be regaining a smooth top and the rest requires refinishing. With this information the simplest solution is to refinsh all and level the top, no mo patina guys. A GOOD random orbit sander is not often in the common work room, I try to help people avoid finding these annoying sander marks too late, as people often think the small vibrator sanders ane capable of finish sanding, since they are called finish sanders.
Chris what you have described is all sound information for restoration and is what I also try to do when ever possible. Right now Martin that isn't what he need to solve the rough surface situation. I am pleased to hear you describe in detail all the methods for a safe restoation process. Many people who read these threads carefully they will know the most of the answers here are conservation first.
Martin, I hope you are beter able to make a wiser decision as a result.
