Well..once again I beg to differ with James on this one..Gustav Stickley..one of the foremost designers of Mission furniture used White oak exclusively, and usually rift or quarter sawn for figure and stability, as rift sawn boards are the most dimensionally stable. Red Oak is no where near the decay resistance or dimensional stability of White, and doesn't fume (ammonia) well or take a finish as well. Red Oak was NEVER used in boat or shipbuilding, for good reason.... White Oak is one of the most prevelant woods in boat and ship building structure where strength, dimensional stability, and rot resistance was called for.White oak can last for hundreds of years, when Red Oak would've rotted away... I rarely see old Red Oak furniture...perhaps modern stuff, but White Oak and English brown oak almost exclusively....and some times Ash was used together with white oak..Red oak is used in Plywoods more than in solid wood construction as a rule..
