The value will be lowered to some degree if you repaint. The painted hoosiers are becoming more popular it is true, but are only 3/4 as valued as the old oak cupboards of equal stature. You may be able to recapture the crackle as you repaint by first brushing on a thin coat of watered down hide glue. This should be as thin as milk. Then as this starts to set up, use a thin cotton cloth over a flat block of wood and some white vinegar to clean the glue off the high layer of paint, leaving the glue in the cracks undisturbed. Next lightly sand the paint also with a flat block of wood using a fine open coat 220 grit sand paper, dust off with a tack cloth. Next put on a coat of oil base paint, which should recrack as befor. Test this in an out of the way place, if you don't see what you want, try a coat of shellac befor the paint coat is applied. Let us know how this works, others will want to know how it turns out, good luck, James.
