The answer, once again, is shellac. The type would have been a cruder form with out the natural wax removed. Possibly an orange shellac, known for its rich amber color, and the grain popping effect it has. Look for shellac in the flake form, mix it with very good quality alcohol. Avoid methol alcohol as it is very unhealthy to work with, very good for shellac, but to much on the skin or a little inside the body, can be fatal. Soak the shellac for 8 hours in the alcohol and strain very fine, apply with a brush or spray. Hand rub when dry with paraffin oil and pumice polish. Look for these products at the Wood Workers Store, online.
