I have one of these in my shop right now, it is very old, with the original finish, and very dark. I suspect that in the period it is from, yours most likely had a finish. Such a serious assembly most likely was from a furniture maker, a factory, and had a shellac finish. I notice that you would like to bring out the beauty of the grain, my suggestions were aimed at reproducing the "antique look" and for replacing needed surface oil, which I feel would be most suitable for this item. You can apply a clear oil, wax, or what ever you think will do what you are after. As for tung oil, which is often just linseed oil and naptha and some driers, that is ok too. But should you use pure tung oil that would not have been original, it will need frequent coating to keep it from looking dull. also know that pure tung oil can't be removed without serious sanding, and according to the manufacturers, won't properly hold a finish.
