ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

I've been working on an 1860's rosewood piano that has some severe water damage on the top. The finish is original, and is an unusually thick French polish.
I have restored most of the damaged finish, but there is an area on the top where water soaked through a seam in the (thick) veneer and caused it to curl up severely over a length of about 3 feet. I've tried gentle heat and moisture to try to get the veneer to relax and lay back down, but am not having much success, partially because the finish is so thick. It took weeks to build up the finish in other areas where the water had gotten under it. Before I resort to more severe and labor intensive methods, does anybody have any shortcuts to suggest?
