Old metal trunk restoration

I have a large metal trunk.I would like to restore to original condition. It was originaly painted in dark blue. Paint in many places has worn leaving metal exposed. What is the proper way to prepare for painting, what is the proper paint to use. As you can tell by my question I have no experience. Your help would be appreciated.
