Yes, the chest was and still is filthy. I took out the drawers and wiped/brushed all of the surfaces then blew it out with compressed air. I wiped it down with a damp cloth, and it too was filthy, top, sides, etc.

I spent many hours searching ebay and other sites, but did not find any chests that were much similar to this one aside from their basic 2 over four design. I like how the chest looks old, but also looks much more, errr, contemporary than others, sort of an arts and crafts look.

It has definitely been refinished many, many years ago, though whoever did it then also painted/shellaced the knobs and did a generally sloppy job. My current train of thought is to replace the damaged veneers, reglue the loose dovetails, and refinish the chest in a period correct material so that it looks the same as now, only without looking so beat up when viewed up close. Oh, and replace the missing knob!
