It sounds from your description that the piece was probably made in the 1900-1930 range. It probably is a factory made piece. Chances are good that it has shellac for a finish. Look at the edge of the front frame and at the drawer dividers and see if there is a number stamped in the wood. At $50-$100 it sounds like a good buy.
