Heres what I've done. Using a good filler, level the missing areas, sanding the area to blend in, then prime paint it. After that you can either Faux paint wood , or paint an over all color or for a real unique piece---- wallpaper it! P.S. You may have to glue down some of the frayed edges befor filling so they don't blister or edge riseup on it. Good luck.
