Lane Cedar chest

I have a 1952 Lane Cedar chest that was given to my wife from her mother. It seems to be solid cedar with vaneer on the outside. The Veneer is badly peeling and I am thinking about refinishing it. I am not sure if I should try to remove the veneer and paint or stain it or put new veneer back on. I am not real familiar with working with veneer so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Just to be clear, there is no way to salvage the veneer that is on there since it has chipped off in large pieces in some areas.
