There are many ways to get to a certain finish or color. I wouldn't be to concerned with what was done 80 years ago - the products today are better, use them to your advantage, you can copy what existed in terms of color or finish without changing the original look. If you see over spray, it was sprayed - but maybe this isn't the original finish your looking at - it may have been redone!
