ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

Match Early Furniture Finish?

I have a question about how finish was applied on furniture in the early 1900. I am trying to restore a table for my brother, it belonged to our grandmother, and we believe it was built in 1920 or so. I know the wood is oak, and the surface was prepared with orange shellac. The problem I have is the last coat, there is a lot of over spray, I think, that you can see under the drawer pull and on the under side of the drawer. Did the early craftsman add color to the shellac? Did they spray and wipe to give an antique look? The color of the original table is a dark Early American with dark streaks in the grain.

Thanks for any help,

Steve King
