The screw holes will show you weather the mirror is original, as there will be one old set of holes in the case that match your harp perfectly. An NGR Stain is a very agressive type stain that can be allowed to stand on the wood till a thick film has set up and will finish right over just fine. Just watch the kind of finish you are useing, a spray lacquer like Deft will work well to avoid a brush that stirs up the pigment during brushing. Also there are brushing lacquers that work well in this case. A black walnut stain made by Watco Danish Oil will work fairly well and will show more grain, but can be finished over with any finish you choose.
