"grained" woodwork

I have original hand grained wood work, doors and built in cabinets from the 1890's. Some of it is badly damaged (nicked scratched), some is dirty - including soot from old cooking stove and some has glue on it from the IDIOT who glued some sort of (plastic?)"cute" name tags on all the bedroom doors. Any suggestions welcomed. Thanks!
