The handle should be repaired if at all possible, and done well. If you decide to remove any materials, do so as carefully as you can so that they can be saved in a proper acid free storage container with a tight fitting lid. You may want them later if the original materials should need to be placed back inside of it. Also it will give you a pattern to copy and an insight as to how the work was accomplished. Duplicate the material and placement if possible.
