I like dye stains for these hard figured Maples. Cherry and Birch have been known to produce these "tiger" stripes too, as well as birdseyes common in Maples...I am working with some birdseye cherry right now that I found in a pile of normal Cherry boards at the local wood supplier....even the owner had only seen this a few times...he tried to talk me out of the board...lol. TransTints produce a beautiful color on Maple, you can then use a Gel stain to add "patina" around the edges and under the edges of the top and sides, insides of legs, etc. if desired...follow with 2-3 coats of Alkyd varnish or Tung oil varnish, polished out....or a Garnet Dewaxed shellac, which would be more "period". As James states oil based products tend to "pop" the grain more....but in the time it takes a coat of oil to dry, you can almost finish the piece with Transtints in water or alcohol and shellac.....
