Joe, I apologize for the apparent lack of answer to your post as well.....Thanks to Bernie for stepping in.....perhaps one reason is that there are several recent posts regarding cleaning tobacco residue from furniture in the index. You may want to try a commercial cleaner as well like Minwax's furniture cleaner...but in most cases a little 0000 steel wool is necessary to hasten the process, as Bernie suggested. If the underlying finish film is in good shape after the smoke residue removal, the surface could polished with something like 3M's one step Cleaner Wax or Mohawks Deluxing Compound to bring it back to a lustrous shine. Both of these products contain a fine compound and leave a smooth waxed surface in one step.
