Once you soften the old finish, use an alcohol wet brush to swipe the top off the now gooey finish. This will pick up the dead finish off the top that has dried out and is loaded with dirt. As well as cleaning the finish left it will give a clearer view of the wood below the finish. Wipe the brush off and repeat, keeping a wet edge, and smoothing the previous areas with more alcohol. Once quite dry, about 12 hours, sand lightly with 320 open coat paper and wipe off any dust. Now brush on a fresh coat of dewaxed shellac and when this has dried, lightly polish with 0000 steel wool and wax with a good satin bees wax made for furniture;-)
