Of course, it depends... But it sounds to me like you want to try a product called "amalgamator" (different brands), which is basically a mixture of alcohol and laquer thinner. The object is to partially soften and melt the finish, and mush it around a little, hoping to fill the cracks. You could try alcohol alone- will usually work on shellac finishes, which was probably used. Naturally, try it on an inconspicuous area. But first you should remove wax and oil: Mineral-spirits paint thinner can be used, on a clean rag. Do that cleaning several times- wipe off each time with clean rags. Naptha is stronger and works better, but is more dangerous. Read the labels on the cans. Let it dry before the alcohol. There's more, but that should get you started.
