In Response To: Cherry Sideboard with smoke residue in finish (Joe Brown)

Just saw your question from June- I cant imagine why (apparently) no one else has answered you. It may be very simple; try a little paint - thinner or mineral spirits on a soft cotton rag-wipe away the gunk. Try in a small, less visible spot first. Usually wont affect the underlying finish. A more powerful method is to use naptha the same way. Can also be used with 000 or 0000 steel wool; its more aggresive than cotton. Rub with the grain only; Make sure theres plenty of ventilation. If it gets very clean after several wipings, you can wax it with paste wax (after completely dry), following directions on the can. It oughta look great. I'm jealous! Bernie
