While lacquer certainly does produce a decent finish, brushing, sanding and rubbing out a lacquer finish for a novice is quite a challenge. You can't beat a varnish for ease of application and a good varnish will yield a tougher finish than lacquer or shellac. There are many wipe on products available that yield excellent results and are among the easiest finishes to apply, and I reccomend them if you're not used to applying a finish by brush. Tung oil varnish, Gel varnish, traditional Alkyds and wipe on varnish/poly finishes all will give you a tough, easy to apply, warm amber finish on oak and require almost no rubbing out. Upkeep is minimal, and most varnishes can be cleaned, wet sanded, touched up and recoated for restoration down the line...if needed. Some of my favorites include, Bartley Gel varnish, Behlen's Master Gel, WaterLox, and Minwax's Wipe on Poly..(which was recently named as Fine Woodworkings favorite for this type of wipe on finish in a test of 17 brands..), Foolproof application and they really bring out the grain....
