diet drink spill on Mom's dining room table

I just received my Mom's dining room set. In the move, I spilled a diet dr. pepper which soaked into the corner of the table for the 4 hour drive home. I think it is only in the wax, but I have tried ashes and mayonnaise which has lightened up the stain to a milky white. It is a drexel dining table that has a beautiful finish on it. Help please. In 4 hours I managed to do more harm than all the 40 years that my mom had the table.
