I'm restoring a antique chair. After stripping it, I have realized that someone previously applied some sort of white/creamy(primer maybe) on it? All I know is that I can't get if off. The design is a carving on the two back supporting pieces and a lion carving where the hands would rest on the chair arms. The carved areas have cracks throughout the design. What can I do to get rid of this primer (or what ever it is)and protect the wood from futher deterioration prior to re-staining it? Also, it looks like either termite or just deterioration from time exist around the base of the chair where the cusion would rest. Any ideas/recommendations for a wood sealant or something that would fill the air spots so it wouldn't get worse? Thank you very much for your help. Have a fantastic day.
