Pine is quite a soft wood, and ball point pens or roller tip pens can wreak havoc on them. Unfortunately the only way to remove them completely is usually to strip the table and sand or steam them out, fill the knife cuts and refinish the top. No finish will protect the wood from this type of damage if the wood is a soft wood, except perhaps a pour on epoxy bar type finish, but it has it's own negatives....
