What about putting a sheet of 1/2" or 3/4" plywood under tha mattress instead of springs? The plywood could be cut to the 1/2" shorter in both dimensions as the mattress and it would not be visible. It could just be set directly on top of the rails. If you are afreaid of it moving around, you could get some rare earth magnets and drill appropriate sized holes in the plywood, insert and glue the magnets in the holes, and they would keep the wood from sliding around on top of the rails. You'd only need 1 at each corner.
