paint in oak grain

I am cleaning up an old dining room chair for a friend,it has some white paint on it.The paint is so old it is like hard chalk, when I used the heat gun on it there was a smell like resin,it does have shellac or varnish to.The paint in the grain is impossiable to get out.Any ideas as how to remove it(have used paint remover)or cover it up? It also has a fiber seat which I plan to replace,if I can get it clean it will not need anything but a coat of poly it,s a beautiful golden oak.
