We sometimes are able to resaw these pieces into and glue them back together. this leaves the inside out and all is a bit thinner, which can be replaces with a core material. A bandsaw is a good tool for this method, giving a deeper cut and a thinner saw kerf. Once the skirt is glued back together, a pass over a jointer or a belt sander will remove the cut lines and the color may be a little lighter, but a bit of manipulation with the stain should hide that as well. Good luck and let me know if the face reassignment works for you should you give it a try, there's nothing to loose.
