Hi Mary...typically this type of leather top is finished...lacquer or shellac is the most common...I'd start with cleaning it with some mineral spirits, and once wet with the mineral spirits you'll probably find that it looks a lot better..you'll have to make a determination as to wether it looks good enough..if there are still stains and white rings then you might have to carefully and lightly wet sand with 800/600 wet/dry silicon carbide paper, you definately don't want to go through the finish...and remove the white rings after drying from the MS with a light wipe with a rag dampened with some alcohol....At this point it's possible that you could polish the remaining finish to a nice sheen with a rubbing compound and wax it .....but only if the finish will respond to that...if there's any touch up to be done then chances are better that a recoat with the right topcoat would give you a better result after the touch ups...pad on a few coats of shellac or spray on a coat or two of Satin lacquer....and then rub down and wax...
