Remove later paint without harming original coat ?

Hi...

We have an early, what we believe, is a Pennsylvania Dower Chest (3 drawers, Chippendale style feet, strap hinges, etc)... Unfortunately, someone painted it bright blue... We don't know if there were any original designs, or perhaps an original painted surface, when it was first made... Is there a way/product to remove the blue paint, without harming (or perhaps even removing) the original decorations, or paint... Of course, this is assuming there were any designs, or a painted surface, in the first place... Thanks for any help that you might offer... Frank
