TransTints are great....food coloring would not be as light fast (UV stable) as the dyes are not as strong......ok for toys. The Transtints are well worth the money...about 15-16$ a bottle, and one bottle will make gallons of colorant....they can be mixed in virtually any medium. what are you using for your finish? I am very familiar with the look your after, as I refinish instruments as well...and several of the instrument manufacturers offer that type of finish..in a lot of cool colors..!To make a really deep color and with the most transparent look, you can stain with the dye and then add dyes to the first finish coats, following with successive clear coats to add depth without losing clarity...the "Tobacco" and "sunburst" finishes are accomplished that way utilizing several different color coats.....you can also "tone" the contours and edges with color to add dimension to the body, while still ending up with a transparent colored finish.....http://www.homesteadfinishing.com/htdocs/TransTint.htm Check out #6028 emerald green...(the purple rocks too..)
