As for the plating question, most plating is over a steel or iron material when dealing with antiques. There fore, place a magnet onto the surface and see if it will hold to the surface, if it does then you probably have brass plate. As for the smoke on the metal, there is most likely a finish over the brass. This should help protect some of the patina and any coloration from the maker. I would test a little paint thinner in a hidden area to see if the results are satisfactory. A product called Nevr-dull Polish should work well too, I can find it in many Hdw. stores and it is also at highlandhardware.com

After you are satisfied with the cleaning you may want to add a thin coat of Brass Lacquer to replace the wear on the surface, clean well with naptha and a clean cotton cloth to remove the oil film from cleaning and avoid bare hands after this point as well.
