Pain in the Brass...

I'm tryng to restore a 1940's (I think) brass SMOKERS STAND (standing ashtray) and have read about and tried most of the methods for removing dirt and stains. Nothing seems to work that won't also destroy the patina of the metal. I'm NOT looking to polish it up. What I want to do is remove the old nicotine stains which seem to be in the metal. Is that even possible?

ANyway, I'm starting to wonder if this piece is even solid brass or merely brass plated as some of the pitting now has a greenish tint and looks like surface pitting. Is there a way to know for sure and would that denmand that I not attempt any possible cleaning methods?

Thanks in advance,

CJ
