i've made a real mess of this one

I picked up a second hand table and tried to give it a new look by refinishing the top. I sanded it down to bare wood and applied 5 coats of clear varathane with light sanding in between but the result is still blotchy, streaky and rough looking. Its as if the product didn't sink into some spots for some reason. Without spending a lot more time on this, do you have any advice for me to fix this. I did my own kitchen table last month and it turned out beautifully. Thanks in advance, Linda
