Staining and finishing cane can be a problem. first the hard shell on the face does not easily stain, analine dye works well, but can be hard to find and is a little tricky to use. A lacquer toner, like Behlen or Minwax makes will often work, but can chip off later if it's too thickly applied. Many choose not to stain and finish at all since it will shorten the life of the cane seat due to brittleness and drying out the material. The analine dye mixed with alcohol will help to reduce this problem. Just save pieces of the cane to experiment on prior to staining and finishing, and keep the finish fairly thin, like from a lacquer spray can.
