In Response To: damaged leather top (Susan Thompson)

Any idea how old this piece is?...usually leather recessed in a top is finished, in most cases with lacquer or shellac, but not always...you can't strip it without ruining it though, so your limited to restoring the existing finish or replacing the leather. It can be tough to know wether it has been finished by looking at it...I would clean it well with some Mineral spirits and a rag...if it looks better when wet with the MS then perhaps you can just paste wax it with a colored paste wax...if it has white rings and/or patches of grey then you might have to try to remove them with a quick swipe with a cloth pad dampened with some alcohol...if it is lacquered then you can lightly wet sand it with 600 grit sand paper and touch it up and recoat it..if it is shellac then you can clean it, touch it up and pad on a few coats of dewaxed shellac ..all would be followed by a rub down with 0000 steel wool and a paste waxing...if the damage is more severe then you may have to contemplate replacement...but if it's the original top on an antique then it's a judgement call...usually the original should be left intact and restored as well as possible...
