Did the previous owners have a small dog or cats?...some woods do have nasty odors...and the only way to get rid of it is to seal the whole piece...but I have seen pieces that have been peed on and sprayed repeatedly by small animals over many years...it's almost impossible to remove the stench...the damage is usually very low on the piece (floor level), and eventually the whole piece will soak up the stench over the years...the urine runs down the legs and or front section of the piece and gets soaked up by the end grain and unfinished undersides of the piece..smell around the base and see if it smells worse...
