OOPS! did a terrific job; the tar just melted away. The underlying wood is fine--no shading or shadowing to indicate that the tar had ever been there. As a bonus, OOPS! also softened and loosened up a century's worth of wax buildup so that mopping up with mineral spirits was not too strenuous, followed by a wipe-down with Murphy's and a rinse with mild vinegar water. The wood is a little cloudy now, but I think buffing with 0000 steel and tack cloth, followed by paste wax will finish the job.
