If you can get liver of sulphur, and a good art store may keep it in stock, it will do the task. In a pinch toy can use ammonia but the color will be brownish. Make sure the surface is free of dirt, scale or any finish. A wash with lacquer thinner will remove any shellac or lacquer, fresh air is needed. Polish the brass to a bright luster, wear cotton gloves to avoid printing the metal, and wipe off with paint thinner again to remove any brass polish on the surface. The liver of sulphur should be heated till it is too hot to touch, avoid boiling it. Apply with a 1/2" brush and allow to darken to the color you want then rinse with water and continue on to the next area. When finished buff with a soft cloth and wax to protect the film.
