ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

I have just aquired a 1930`s Bakelite telephone its a bit tatty. Not sure what it is made of but can it be cleaned up? Also the dial is brass but looks like it may of been painted black, anyone give advice on this too.
