The problem is that a pot holder is full of oil and moisture, after a few uses the thing is likely to be affected with heat from a pan, etc, forcing steam into the table top. A trivet or the like is better.
I think you should try the bizarre but effective mayonnaise treatment. Just smear this stuff on the table top for a couple hours, wipe off and clean with a lemon oil product. This actually works, is cheep and simple, then apply a paste wax for a little extra protection, and avoid hot wet dish rags, in case you use that too.
